A bomb found on a driveway in front of a home in Ventura this week was built out of a highlighter, low-explosive gunpowder and a fuse, authorities said.
The device found in the 100 block of East Ramona Street did not appear complex, police said, adding that no injuries were reported and no suspects have been arrested.
Authorities responded to a call from a resident who found a suspicious explosive device about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, police said. The woman said she began to dismantle the device but stopped when she smelled a chemical odor.
Police evacuated nearby homes, and the Ventura County sheriff's bomb squad was called to the scene. A robot removed the device from the driveway and put it in a container.
The device could have caused serious injury if it had exploded, police said.
Police advise anyone who finds such a device to contact them rather than tinker with it.
