A 24-year-old man was arrested Sunday night on suspicion of robbing a Ventura Quiznos at gunpoint.
Officers arrived within one minute of the 911 call and determined the robber had approached the store's only employee, who was cleaning in a back room, pointed a gun and demanded money from the register.
The robber left after the clerk handed over cash and the employee was unharmed.
An officer checking the area later detained Michael Bricker. Bricker's clothing matched the clerk's description of the robber and police found the handgun and cash taken in the robbery among his possessions. Bricker was arrested on suspicion of armed robbery and booked into Ventura County jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.
Under California's 10-20-life law, a defendant may face an additional 10 years to his robbery prison sentence for displaying a gun, 20 years for firing a fun and 25 years to life for causing serious injury to another person with a gun.
Robbery and armed robbery are also considered "strike" offenses under the state's Three Strikes Law. You may not realize how important a three strikes conviction is to you now, but you will if you are ever facing life imprisonment for a minor charge that may come up in your distant future.
