A jury today found Greg Winslow, the former men's basketball coach at Ventura College, guilty on three of seven felony counts.
Winslow was found guilty for misappropriation of public funds, failure to pay public money and grand theft. He was found not guilty of identification theft, embezzlement, forgery and dissuading a witness from testifying.
The sentencing is set for May 20. Winslow is facing up to five years and four months in prison, including four years for the misappropriation charge.
Prosecutors had alleged Winslow opened a secret, unauthorized, joint bank account and deposited donations to the college, gym rental money and cash from fundraising events. The account was set up for the V-Town Pirates, a youth club team where Winslow's son was a member. Donations for the men's basketball team at Ventura College, however, were co-mingled with the youth club's money.
On March 9, Winslow's boyhood friend, Kevin Wise - a prosecution witness in the trial - committed suicide hours before he was set to testify again. Allegedly Wise was with Winslow when he opened the joint account.
If you or someone you know is facing grand theft or
identity theft, the best thing you can do is hire a criminal defense lawyer. Theft charges for property valued at more than $400 is grand theft. If committed by way of
fraud
or misrepresentation, a defendant may face fraud or
embezzlement
charges that could result up to 16 months or 2-3 years in state prison.
