A 36-year-old Mexican drug king Jose Antonio Medina Arreguin pleaded guilty Wednesday in Ventura to conspiring to possess heroin for sale and is facing up to 24 years in prison.
Arreguin also admitted the conspiracy involved more than 40 kilograms - or 88 pounds - of heroin.
Arreguin, also known as "Don Pepe" or "Mexico's King of Heroin,' was booked into Ventura County jail Oct. 13 after being extradited from Mexico.
He was accused of orchestrating large shipments of drugs in secret compartments of vehicles across the border to homes in Oxnard, Downey, Los Angeles, Long Beach and San Jose.
Court documents say that money from the drug sales was illegally transported out of the country and into Mexico on a regular basis. About once a week, Arreguin would get between $100,000 and $260,000.
Arreguin remained behind bars in Ventura County jail Wednesday. He is ineligible for bail due to an immigration hold. His sentencing is set for April 13.
