Last year a case was brought against the Target Corporation which stated that the retail stores were crushing batteries and other hazards materials in trash compactors in an effort to avoid high hazmat disposal charges.
The case alleges that at least 240 stores are guilty of this type of activity over a five year period.
"Target's unlawful actions have put the health of Alameda County residents at risk," Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O'Malley told the San Francisco Chronicle during the case. "The violation of our state's environmental protection laws will not be tolerated."
A California Judge ordered them to cease disposing of illegal materials in landfills.

I am attorney Robert Helfend. My office regularly consults and works with experienced investigators, forensic specialists, lab technicians, toxicologists, blood spatter analysts, and weapons experts in defending our clients. We recognize that police departments have limited resources and often cut corners by ignoring certain witnesses, hastily collecting evidence from crime scenes, or failing to track down alternative leads. We try to expose shortcuts taken by the police and poke holes in the prosecution's case against our clients." Los Angeles Defense Attorney Robert Helfend
