In a previous blog a case was highlighted involving an inmate in the Los Angeles Prison System who accused officers of assaulting him by spraying pepper spray on his anus. The inmate said that he felt sexually violated and that he was changed by the incident.
Since then the district attorney has decided not to file charges against the correctional officers. However, the inmate was awarded a large sum of money.
There will now be an internal investigation into the situation to see if the officers will be fired or allowed to return to work. But in the nearly three years since the original report, two of the inmates have been on paid leave. This is costing an already struggling law enforcement system money that it simply doesn't have.
Sheriff Lee Baca has now decided that waiting to launch an internal investigation until after the district attorney releases a case is no longer a good idea. He has stated that from now on when an incident occurs, the official investigation will begin immediately. This will hopefully prevent years of paying for men and women who aren't working.
