Fifty five year old Akbar Fonooni and forty nine year old Anthony Carone are the two men recently accused of inflating the cost of items used for the inner workings of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and using the extra monies for new furniture in the office buildings.
"It appears by our own review that furniture and materials purchased for use in the commission offices and board room was involved," said Joe Ramallo, a spokesman for the utility.
The crime was alledgedly commited over the last six years and has funded the renovations of three floors in the downtown office. The men are accused of raising the cost of three million dollars worth of supplies by at least ten percent. A third person who is somehow involved in the crime, a forty five year old man by the name of Troy Mitchell Holt, will also face felony charges.
There are also other twists in the case that make the situation seem even more shady. For instance the invoices for the furniture purchases do not show furniture but other supplies instead.
"The department is continuing its own internal investigation of this matter and earlier today requested the assistance of City Controller Wendy Greuel to conduct a full audit of the Purchasing Card program in order to identify additional improvements," Ramallo said in a statement.
