James Halstead was living the high life with exotic cars, expensive jewelry, and a Las Vegas house and plenty of cash, until he was arrested for fraud. Last Wednesday he was sentenced to ten years in federal prison for taking millions of dollars from unknowing investors.
His victims, including retirees on fixed incomes, are said to have invested about 50 millions dollars and were promised huge returns. Instead the money went to a lavish lifestyle for Halstead.
James pleaded guilty to three charges in the case and received the maximum penalty for his crimes. During the trial several of his victims were able to speak to the judge and told him of foreclosed homes, unpaid medical bills, and broken families.
"I have lost everything I have worked 56 years for," said 74-year-old Bent Christensen, who said he was forced to sell his Huntington Beach home to avoid bankruptcy and now relies on loans from his children to survive. "My family has been totally destroyed.... Our golden retirement years have been turned into a nightmare."
