In California a judge has experienced threats against herself and witnesses in the case currently before her. The case is part of the lawsuit against Dole Foods Banana plantations concerning the Nicaraguan workers who were allegedly harmed by pesticides.
Judge Victoria Chaney held a closed doors meeting with attorney's in the case concerning claims of witness tampering. When she stepped to the bench after the meeting she boldly announced that radio threats in Nicaragua had been made against her and witnesses in the case. She stated that the judicial protective unit would be notified.
"This appears to be flagrant witness tampering," she said. "I have even more grave concerns about witness safety than I did before."
Steve Condie, lawyer for the plaintiff, said outside court: "I have not seen any evidence that's credible to me that these witnesses are in danger."
Judge Chaney said that the threats did not appear to involve Condie.
