In San Francisco the annual pride parade and celebration were held this month. However, a late Saturday night shooting left attendants feeling awful during a time which should have been full of celebration and joy.
The demonstration was held in The Castro district, a place known for gay and lesbians since the 60's when Harvey Milk was elected. On this Saturday, named 'Pink Saturday' which is simply a huge block party held the night before the actual Pride day, an unnamed man started shooting into the crowd.
Nineteen year old Steven Powell was hit and killed by one of the bullets while two others were hit but expected to recover fully.
Another website quoted a person who was there as posting on Californiabeat.org by saying, "I saw a massive wave of cops with their guns drawn coming to our area . . . then people started screaming and running away so I went back to the ground thinking 'Oh my God, this is real.'"
Although this appears to be a hate crime, and is not believed to be so, Los Angeles Defense Attorney Robert Michael Helfend can still help. He knows that every person deserves a great defense and a chance at a long life lived freely.
