Alfredo Montez Valenzuela is currently standing trial for the murders of an elderly couple who were stabbed to death in 2003. The prosecution is pushing hard for the death penalty and the outlook doesn't seem great.
The choice to pursue the death penalty over life in prison is technically decided by the office of the district attorney, but that really means that one man, current chairman Curt Hazell, makes the call. He and his office never explain their decision to go one way or the other.
"We don't talk about individual cases or why decisions were made," said Sandi Gibbons, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.
This case, and whomever is guilty of it, is especially gruesome. The perpetrator climbed through the window and stabbed first the wife, more than forty times, and then the husband, a total of 113 times. The scene has been described by detectives as 'one of the bloodiest crimes scenes' they have ever seen.
