We've all seen the popular hit television show Numb3rs where brothers, one an FBI agent and one a mathematician, work together to solve crime
. It's a great idea and a great drama.
The math department at UCLA is mimicking the show in that they have currently been helping the LAPD by using applied mathematics to anticipate crime. On the show they use advanced algorithms to track human behavior as it pertains to crime of all kinds. The UCLA mathematicians are doing the same by showing in which areas an elevated police presence would help based on the math of past crimes. They aim to identify urban crime 'hot spots' and hopefully prevent future break ins, assaults, and other crime.
Ventura Defense Attorney Robert Michael Helfend is here for you should you or someone you love be caught in one of these hot spots and accused of a crime.
