A task force of police swept Venice Beach before sunrise on Friday morning arresting nearly 50 people for warrants and felony violations. Several of those taken in were homeless.
Authorities said that the sweep was due to an increase in crime as well as a spike in the number of people sleeping on the beach and therefore violating the midnight curfew set by the state.
The action wasn't completely heartless though. The LAPD had a team of social workers, counselors, and religious representatives ready to speak with those arrested and advise them of the available resources in the area such as social services and even rehab locations.
"They handed out pamphlets of information on where to try [to] get shelter, gave them medical attention, gave them information to try and help them with being homeless," said Sgt. Kevin Lowe, day watch commander for the LAPD's Pacific Division. "A lot of them don't take our advice, but at least we offer it."
It was suggested that some of the homeless arrested were thankful for the showers offered and everyone was very cooperative.
