Nearly two dozen children witnessed a beating of their crossing guard. The 59 year old guard blew her whistle and told two people driving through the intersection to stop for passing children.
The occupants of the car instead screamed at the women and then jumped out of the car and beat the women, taking her whistle and stop sign. Then the pair got back into their car and drove east on Firestone Boulevard and out of view. The sign was later found in the suspects home.
Due to the involment of eye witnesses who called police with accounts of the crime and licence plate numbers the suspects were apprehended and are in police custody . The guard was treated and released from the Florence-Firestone hospital. This area ranks among the most violent communities in the county according to the LA Times. "In the six months ending Oct. 24, the most recent for which complete data are available, 446 serious violent crimes were reported in Florence-Firestone, including seven homicides, six rapes, 223 aggravated assaults and 210 robberies."
