On September 24th of 2007, Edwin Escobar was outside his home celebrating his mother's birthday. He was shot and killed by a man later identified as Richard Alvarez. Reportedly the young man had no gang affiliations.
This week Alvarez was found guilty of all charges, not only murder in the first degree, but also the special circumstance that it was a gang related shooting that would 'further the activities of the criminal street gang' of which Alvarez was affiliated. He was also convicted of second degree robbery of a truck driver later that same night.
"We're going to fight this to the end," defense attorney James Goldstein said after the verdict. "We're going to appeal."
Sentencing in the case is set for January 18th and Alvarez will face a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
