A 74 year old Los Angeles man was sentenced to 15 years to life for stabbing a doctor in a routine heart appointment.
The story alleges that Mike Du Trieu was at the office of Dr. Mohamed Latif for a cardiovascular workup when he jumped on the doctor and stabbed him in the back, left shoulder and face with a pocketknife. The reason behind the attack was Trieu's belief that Dr. Latif killed his mother years ago.
A colleague of Latif's acted quickly and was able to pull Trieu off saving Latif's life. However, the good doctor was left paralyzed. the judge added 5 years to his sentence due to the paralysis.
Although Trieu pleaded with the judge, even using records of his military service, for a lessor sentence he was given a total of twenty years to life without the possibility of parole.
