Susanne McGraham-Paisley is the sister of the homeless man who was burned to death in 2008 by 31 year old Ben Martin. When talking about the horrible murder she disolves into tears. "It's awful, when I think of my brother burning to death...," she said amid tears, "... just awful. Ben Martin was sick, mentally sick. He had a thing against homeless people and he took it out on my brother."
She is now one of a group of people who are advocating rights for homeless people. They are seeking to get an Assembly bill passed that would give homeless people, or those interest groups helping to protect them, the right to seek redress by suing those who attack them for civil rights violations. It would keep from adding to the already overpopulated jails but still give the homeless an avenue for seeing their attackers punished in a way which benefits them.
If you are ever charged with a civil rights crime such as this, you will need a lawyer who has experience in all sorts of cases. Los Angeles Criminal Defense Attorney Robert Michael Helfend is that attorney. He understands what it means to be charged with a crime like this and he will put together an aggressive defense that will work toward a favorable verdict.
Robert Helfend will meet with you for a free initial consultation and explain the charges and his plan to overcome them to you.
