Conspiracy Conviction Overturned

Conspiracy Conviction Overturned
A US Court of Appeals panel overturned a graduate student's conviction on conspiracy and arson charges, saying that the defendant, William Cottrell, 29, should have had an opportunity to present evidence of the effect of his Asperger's Syndrome diagnosis. According to his attorneys, his diagnosis prevents Cottrell from forming intent to participate in a conspiracy. Cottrell was convicted in 2005 of vandalizing and destroying 125 Hummers and SUVs by firebombing them, spraypainting them and smashing their windows. Earlier in the year a three-judge panel upheld Cottrell's conviction. The decision was overturned by a full appeals panel.
