USICE Arrests LA Woman For Grand Theft
The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency has arrested a woman in Los Angeles for grand theft just two weeks before she was scheduled to be sentenced on similar charges. Gladys Escobar, 64, was convicted of grand theft in November 2007. Escobar had claimed to be a lawyer who could help her victims file for political asylum in the US.
Instead, officials from the ICE agency say that Escobar took money from her victims and did little else. Some of the immigrants she defrauded were later deported. Escobar, herself an immigrant from El Salvador, is a naturalized US citizen. She operated an income tax service located in her sister's hair salon in Los Angeles at the time of her second arrest. In the most recent cases, all of her victims resided in San Diego County.
