Fugitive In '89 Attempted Murders Arrested
The Orange County District Attorney's office says that a man who escaped from a juvenile hall while being tried on six counts of attempted murder has been arrested in Menifee. Baldomero Diaz, 35, was arrested after prosecutors in Orange County learned that Diaz had been recently arrested in San Diego County on charges related to prostitution and DUI.
Diaz was living with his wife and children, and had attempted to mutilate his fingertips in an effort to avoid being identified. He was living under the name Raul Huerta and was working for a construction company at the time of his arrest.
Diaz was accused of participating in a gang-related drive-by shooting when he was 17 that left six people injured in 1989. He was tried as an adult, and was convicted in absentia six weeks after his escape. He was sentenced to life in prison. Diaz resurfaced in San Diego County under a number of different aliases, one of which was used to obtain a California driver license. Diaz will begin serving his sentence immediately. The District Attorney's office said that Diaz will not face additional charges for escape.
