DEA and ICE Drug Arrests Net 90
The Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency, in conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Agency announced the drug arrests of 88 people in connection with a large heroin distribution ring. The operation was believed to have supplied at least 11 East Los Angeles street gangs with heroin and other controlled substances. The arrests resulted in the seizure of more than $1.5 million in assets, and 22 kilograms of heroin with an estimated street value of at least $2.5 million.
The arrests began with federal indictments handed down on March 12. The indictments identified at least 48 persons charged with conspiracy to distribute more than 1,000 grams of heroin. Arrest warrants were issued and on the morning of March 24, agents arrested 33 of the 48 indicted persons, along with 12 other persons charged with violations of drug laws in the State of California. Three of the remaining 15 indicted persons were already in state custody on other matters and will be turned over to the federal government.
According to the indictments, the organization received black tar heroin from Mexico and distributed it in East Los Angeles, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. The operation was believed to have distributed as many as 15 kilograms of heroin every week and is thought to have generated as much as $9 million per month. The Los Angeles High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Task Force conducted the investigation into the organization's activities, and received support from a number of different federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.
