Orange County Theft Charges
Two men were arrested and charged with theft involving catalytic converters after they were chased by a theft victim and the Orange County Sheriff's Department. The men, Alejandro Villanueva of Lake Elsinore and Victor Cardena of San Marcos, were charged with the theft of 14 catalytic converters after a Santa Ana man heard a noise outside his home at 4:15 am.
The homeowner witnessed two men acting suspiciously. He went outside to see what the men were doing. When they saw him, they quickly returned to the truck and fled the scene. The victim followed and called police from his cell phone. The men entered the 55 freeway southbound and traveled to the Orange County Fairgrounds before exiting, turning around and heading north on the 55 freeway, then entering the I-5 south.
The victim continued to pursue the men and reported his position. The California Highway Patrol intercepted the red Nissan about 25 miles south of I-5. In the cab, the CHP officers found two catalytic converters and an additional 12 devices along with a Sawzall in the bed of the truck. Each converter is worth about $200 as scrap metal because the converters contain platinum.
