Kalta told US District Judge Dale Fischer that he paid Pellicano $50,000 to tap the woman's phone in an effort to prove his innocence. In that case, Kalta eventually pleaded guilty to felony assault. The charge was later reduced to a misdemeanor. Kalta agreed to help federal prosecutors build a case against Pellicano. Pellicano is currently serving 15 years in federal prison on wiretapping, racketeering and conspiracy charges.
