Racketeering, Drug Trafficking Charges Lead To Guilty Plea
Ruben "Doc" Cavazos, a former leader in the Mongols motorcycle gang, pleaded guilty last week to federal racketeering charges. Cavazos was indicted in 2008 for ordering murders, participating in extortion androbbery and on federal drug trafficking charges. His guilty plea to a single count of racketeering could lead to a 20-year sentence.
The case has drawn media attention because the federal government is asking the judge to turn over the Mongol's registered trademarks including logos that appear on the Mongols' Web site, and which members display. Prosecutors allege that the gang's activities were funded in part by credit card fraud schemes, which enabled them to press charges under the RICO statute. Cavazos is scheduled to be sentenced in February.
