Porn Producers Sentenced To One Year
Zacari and Romano, who reside in Northridge, originally drew the attention of the federal government in 2002, in an interview broadcast on PBS' Frontline. The case has taken several turns, and was at one point thrown out of court.
US District Judge Gary Lancaster could have sentenced the couple to 21-27 months in federal prison after accepting their guilty plea, but sentenced the pair to just one year and one day because the prosecution presented no evidence of genuine victimization of women or children in the films. Lancaster also noted that the Department of Justice has filed only three other obscenity cases in the past twenty years in the US 3rd Circuit in Pennsylvania. The case was tried in Pennsylvania because that's where a US postal inspector intercepted a pornographic DVD created by Zacari and Romano. The sentence of one year and one day enables Zacari and Romano to earn a sentence reduction of as much as two months, if they do not pose disciplinary problems in prison.
