Federal Solicitation Of Murder Charges Dismissed Against Torres
George Torres, owner of the Numero Uno supermarket chain, has been released from federal custody and the most serious charges against him have been dropped. Torres, who was convicted in April on 55 counts including racketeering, solicitation of murder, tax evasion, bribery and harboring illegal immigrants. The overturned convictions came about after Torres' attorney filed a misconduct motion against federal prosecutors alleging that they had not turned over all of the evidence against Torres prior to his trial.
Prosecutors recently turned over tape recorded conversations that show that witnesses who testified against Torres at his trial were offered inducements including reduced sentences, cash payments and other favors in exchange for cooperative testimony against Torres. Prosecutors say that the tapes were not reviewed prior to Torres' trial and recommended that Torres' conviction on the most serious charges be vacated.
Torres remains convicted of the other 53 counts, but US District Judge Steven Wilson said that he would consider whether additional convictions should be reversed and whether Torres should be sentenced to time served on the remaining counts. Torres has been in federal custody for two years.
