Federal Copyright Law Violation Alleged
A San Marcos man has pleaded guilty to violating copyright laws for uploading a pirated copy of the film "Slumdog Millionaire". Owen Moody, 25, made the illegal copy available for distribution last year at two Web sites, demonoid.com and mininova.org. At the time Moody distributed to video, the film was in limited release and was not available on DVD.
Moody found a copy of the film on a third Web site. The uploaded copy had been sent to an Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences screener for consideration for an Academy Award. Moody faces up to three years in prison and fines of $250,000 or twice the gain or loss attributed to the pirated work.
