Federal Charges Against 18th Street Gang

Federal Charges Against 18th Street Gang
Federal prosecutors have charged 39 members of the 18th Street Gang with a variety of federal crimes, including racketeering, murder, kidnapping, drug trafficking and money laundering.
Prosecutors, who had issued a preliminary indictment against fifteen members of the gang, issued a broader indictment that named an additional 24 defendants. The case stemmed from the accidental shooting death of a 3-week-old infant during a botched murder attempt of a street vendor. Some gang members were also charged in the 2001 murder of a man whom gang members misidentified as a member of a rival gang. Other gang members were charged in the kidnapping and attempted murder of the shooter who killed the 3-week-old infant.
Among those indicted was Isaac Guillen, a Los Angeles criminal defense attorney accused of money laundering to benefit the gang.
