Deputy Accused Of Accepting Bribes
A former Washoe County Jail sergeant pleaded not guilty to charges of accepting expensive gifts from an associate of "Girls Gone Wild" creator Joe Francis in exchange for guaranteeing special treatment for Francis while he serves a sentence in the Reno jail. Aaron Weinstein, of Los Angeles, pleaded not guilty in Los Angeles federal court to charges of bribery. Weinstein is accused of providing nearly $10,000 in inducements to former Sgt. Michon Mills of Carson City. Two other former jail officials who also accepted gratuities have either pled guilty or will appear in court on similar charges.
Francis was lodged in the Washoe County Jail in 2007 and 2008 while awaiting trial on federal tax evasion charges. Francis has since been moved to the Los Angeles Federal Court. Francis is no stranger to trouble with the law. He was arrested for filming underage girls in sexually explicit poses during spring break in Florida.
Sheriff Mike Haley, who said he was responding to rumors in his department that certain employees had been compromised, sparked the investigation into the activities at the jail. The US Attorney said that their investigation will continue. Francis requested that Weinstein come to Reno while he was in jail and work with Francis' attorney on preparing his defense.
