Los Angeles Police Arrest Bel Air Bandit
Los Angeles police have announced the arrest of the man they claim is one of the leaders of the so-called Hillside Burglars, a group of sophisticated thieveswho specialize in breaking into the homes of the ultra-wealthy in Southern California. The thieves targeted homes in Bel-Air, Brentwood, Pacific Palisades, Beverly Hills and the Hollywood Hills.
The group operated freely for more than three years and is believed to have made off with more than $10 million in cash and stolen goods. The thieves typically evaded security systems and surveillance cameras, and left very little evidence of their presence. Initially, police reported that the group was only captured on security video briefly, and the images were of very low quality for identification purposes. According to one anonymous source in the police department, the group's sophistication is one reason it took so long to discover their identities.
The LAPD is not saying what led them to suspect Troy Corsby Thomas, but they have charged him with two counts of residential burglary stemming from incidents in January 2006 and March 2008. At the time of his arrest, Thomas described himself as an automobile broker. Police have not said whether they plan more arrests, but did indicate that they would hold a news conference today to release more information about the investigation and the arrests.
