Ventura Man Enters Not Guilty Plea On Weapons Charges
A Ventura County man pleaded not guilty to 11 felony weapons charges after a grand jury handed down indictments last month. Jeffrey Fennell, 39, is being held on charges of assault on a peace officer, shooting into an inhabited dwelling, assault with a firearm and discharging a firearm with gross negligence following a domestic abuse call to the man's home. Fennell is accused of firing more than 50 shots at police officers who responded to a standoff in April.
Initially, police were called to the scene because Fennell was holding his wife hostage. She escaped before the police arrived. Fennell refused to surrender to officers and fired more than 50 shots, some of which struck nearby homes and a fire station two blocks away. He was arrested after being shot by SWAT officers who had been at the scene for more than four hours.
