Pakistani Native Pleads Guilty To Running Identity Theft Ring
A Pakistani woman pleaded guilty in federal district court in Los Angeles last week to charges that she ran an identity theft ring. Shamsha Laiwalla, 44, owned a vehicle registration company that allegedly supplied a wide variety of forged identity documents.
Prosecutors alleged that Laiwalla worked with a number of DMV employees to produce licenses, vehicle registrations, birth certificates, and Social Security cards. Laiwalla came to the attention of the FBI in 2007, while an agent was working on another case. Later, the federal investigation was merged with a similar state investigation being conducted by the LAPD's counter-terrorism squad.
Detectives eventually uncovered Laiwalla's extensive operation, which provided forged documentation for vehicles stolen from other states, inspection documents, proof of completion of court-ordered driving instruction, primary identity documents, professional licenses, and driver licenses from California, Nevada and Washington. One of Laiwalla's accomplices in the DMV is accused of erasing warrant notifications from the department's records. Laiwalla also faces 11 charges in Los Angeles Superior Court related to the operation. Thirteen other people with connections to the ring were also arrested.
