Mortgage Fraud Scheme Nets Two In Beverly Hills

Mortgage Fraud Scheme Nets Two In Beverly Hills
A real estate appraiser and a mortgage broker have been convicted in a $40 million real estate fraud plan. Another real estate agent was acquitted on 13 charges, and the judge declared a mistrial on the remaining eight counts. Eight other defendants pleaded guilty to fraud charges related to their roles in the plot.
The fraud involved locating in wealthy areas like Bel Air, Beverly Hills, Carmel, Holmby Hills, La Jolla, Malibu, Mill Valley and Pebble Beach, then fraudulently inflating the value of the homes. The group induced banks to over fund mortgages by more than $40 million and pocketed extra fees and commissions on the sale of the homes. Lehman Brothers Bank lost more than $10 million in the scheme.
