Moorpark Kennel Owner Accused Of Theft
Barbara Hoke, 51, is facing charges of theft for allegedly stealing a dog. Hoke faces one grand theft charge of stealing a dog, a felony. Additionally, Hoke faces charges of filing a false police report and another charge of animal abuse.
Hoke was issued a citation in July for not having the proper permits to operate a dog kennel. Former employees also accused Hoke of using cattle prods and shock collars on the dogs left in her care. Investigators from the Ventura County Sheriff's Office testified that they saw animals with burn marks on them, consistent with the use of a cattle prod.
The grand theft charge was filed because Hoke called police and told them that former employees (those who had filed abuse complaints) had stolen dogs from Hoke's establishment. Hoke attempted to take a dog from a former employee and the police were called. Hoke presented papers showing that the disputed dog belonged to her and was allowed to take the dog. Further investigation showed that the dog in question did not belong to Hoke, so a grand theft charge was added to the complaint.
