Five Former Consul Workers Charged In Deportation Scam
Five former employees of the Armenian consulate, including a former Armenian consul, have been arrested for their roles in a plot to help Armenian citizens avoid deportation. The workers were charged with obstructing immigration proceedings The five were accused of manufacturing and selling official consulate letters for as much as $35,000 each that indicated that the Armenian government could not verify that the subject of the deportation action was an Armenian citizen and therefore the country would not take the deportee back.
The scheme was designed to take advantage of a US law that requires Immigration and Customs Enforcement to release convicted criminals after they've served their sentence. US law permits ICE to hold convicted non-citizens for only six months past their prison release date if deportation is unlikely. The letters were issued to persons who had been convicted of serious crimes including murder and attempted murder. Federal officials have been able to identify some of the recipients of the bogus letters and indicated that they could face additional federal charges and deportation.
