Federal Fraud Scheme

Federal Fraud Scheme
A Los Angeles man who emigrated to the US illegally from Russia has been convicted for his part in a multimillion-dollar fraud scheme. Viacheslav Berkovich was sentenced to 4 years and 7 months in federal prison and ordered to pay $2.7 million in restitution after being convicted of perpetrating a scheme directed at independent truck drivers. Berkovich assisted Nicholas Lakes, another Russian immigrant, of constructing an attack that involved stealing the identity of a legitimate trucking firm in the US Department of Transportation's Safersys.org computer system.
As part of the scheme, Berkovich and Lakes hacked into the system and changed contact information for a registered company to themselves. Following a successful switch, the pair would negotiate cargo transportation work and hire a subcontractor to deliver the cargo, posing as the legitimate trucking company. They would collect the transportation fee from the customer and then switch the contact information to the legitimate trucking firm. When the trucking company that actually transported the load attempted to collect, the legitimate trucking firm would deny any knowledge of the transaction. The pair operated the scheme for more than three years, before being discovered and arrested. Berkovich was given a reduced sentence because he has been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, a form of mild autism.
