Camarillo Man Sentenced In Library Porn Case
Richard Ballard, 58, of Camarillo was sentenced to two years in prison following his conviction on charges that he downloaded Internet child pornography to a public computer terminal in the Camarillo Library. Ballard was arrested in April 2008 after a patron complained to a librarian that Ballard appeared to be downloading child pornography to the library's computer. An undercover detective from the Southern California High Tech Task Force went to the library and witnessed Ballard downloading the explicit images. A Camarillo search warrant was issued for Ballard's home where police found additional sexually explicit materials that involved children.
Ballard was held in jail while his case was adjudicated. The judge sentenced Ballard to time served and ordered him to register immediately as a sex offender. He will be monitored by the Oxnard parole unit to complete the remainder of his sentence.
A conviction on a sexual offense in California holds serious consequences. Even after your prison sentence is complete, you'll be required to register for life as a sexual offender. This designation can make it difficult to find gainful employment and a place to live. In effect, being on the registered sex offender's list means that you'll be prosecuted for your sexual offense for the rest of your life. In addition, conditions of your parole may mean that you cannot live or work near schools or parks, and you cannot go to areas where children congregate, like shopping malls and movie theaters.
Working with an experienced attorney like Ventura criminal defense attorney Robert Michael Helfend is one way in which you can avoid the lifetime agony that the sex offender registry is likely to cause for you. Mr. Helfend will work hard to get the charges against you reduced or dropped. This is the safest and most effective way to ensure that you're not harassed for the rest of your life on the basis of a single conviction.
