Beijing Residents Convicted Of Smuggling Sensitive Technologies
In two separate cases, three Beijing residents were convicted of attempting to smuggle sensitive technologies to China. Two men, William Chi-Wai Tsu was convicted of attempting to transport integrated circuits with military applications to the Peoples' Republic of China and was sentenced to 40 months in federal prison.
Two other men were convicted of smuggling highly sensitive thermal-imaging cameras in their luggage on a plane bound for China. In that case Tah Wei Chao received a 20-month sentence and Zhi Yong Guo was sentenced to five years in federal custody.
Prosecutors said that Tsu operated a front company called Cheerway Trading and shipped more than 400 circuits to a Chinese corporation called Dimagit Science and Technology Co., Ltd, whose mission it was to supply the Chinese military with American-made circuitry. Tsu's company also forwarded technology to other Chinese companies.
In the second case, Chao and Guo were arrested as they tried to board a flight to China with thermal cameras hidden in their luggage. The two were indicted in April. Chao pleaded guilty to the charges and Guo was convicted after a one-week trial in US Federal District Court in Los Angeles.
