Truck Driver Arrested In Fatal Crash
Costa was booked on one count of felony manslaughter and one count of reckless driving, and was being held on a $200,000 bond. In addition to hitting the car driven by Posca, Costa also hit several other vehicles and a building. Twelve other people were injured in the mishap, including three who were taken from the scene in critical condition. The building, which housed the Flintridge Bookstore and Coffeehouse, was severely damaged. Also damaged were a wine shop and a nail salon.
Crash investigators said that semi-trucks are prohibited on Angeles Crest Highway. Costa said he had taken that route because his GPS system indicated that the road was the most direct route to his destination. He discovered that the road was a winding highway and would not have taken it, except that once he was on the road, there was no place to turn around. A similar accident occurred last year. In that accident, a truck on Angeles Crest Highway lost its brakes and crashed into a restaurant. No one was injured in that accident.
