San Bernardino County Staffer Resigns Amid Corruption Charges
Jim Erwin, Chief of Staff for San Bernardino County Supervisor Neil Derry, has resigned. Derry has been charged with ten felony counts of perjury and filing false documents. The charges stem from an ongoing investigation of corruption in the county assessor's office.
Erwin served as an assistant assessor during much of 2007 beside former county assessor Bill Postmus, who is also facing criminal charges related to a $102 million court settlement paid by the county to developer Jeff Burum over flood control issues at a property owned by Burum.
Erwin is accused of concocting the plum settlement while working for the county and simultaneously accepting gifts from Bunum. Bunum also reportedly gave expensive gifts to Patrick O'Reilly, another county employee involved in the settlement. Erwin resigned from the Assessor's Office in late 2007 amid allegations of time-card fraud and misuse of public office for the promotion of private political activities. Postmus is still under investigation for drug and corruption offenses, but has not yet been charged with any crimes.
Erwin claims that he and the county supervisor's office are being unfairly targeted by the District Attorney's office for proposing pay and benefit reductions in the District Attorney's Office and for county judges to help reduce a growing county budget deficit.
