Federal Fraud Charges Filed Against Two LA Women
Federal fraud charges have been filed against two Los Angeles area women who allegedly concocted an elaborate ruse to defraud insurance companies out of more than $1 million. Faye Shilling, 60, of Hawthorne and Jean Crump, 67 of Los Angeles have each been charged with five counts of wire fraud stemming from a life insurance fraud scheme and will be arraigned in federal court today. Two other women, Lydia Pierce, 37 of Long Beach, and Barbara Lynn, 54, of Los Angeles have already pleaded guilty in the case. More arrests are expected.
Allegedly, Schilling and Crump purchased multiple life insurance policies on non-existent people and then staged fake funerals to collect the policy payouts. The policies had face values of between $50,000 and $450,000. According to police, the women had collected as much as $250,000 before being arrested.
Shilling had been employed as a phlebotomist and Crump had worked at one time at a now-closed funeral home in Long Beach owned by Pierce. The women allegedly filled a casket with various materials to give the container the right weight for a human body. Following each fake funeral, the women filed false documents, later notarized by Lynn, with the county stating that the remains had been cremated and had been scattered at sea.
Crump is also accused of offering a medical doctor $50,000 to file a false death certificate, and is also accused of defrauding cash advance companies in connection with the scam. Other people the women had tried to recruit tipped off federal authorities to the scam.
