San Diego Bombing Defendant Pleads Guilty

San Diego Bombing Defendant Pleads Guilty
One of the defendants accused in the detonation of pipe bombs at the San Diego federal courthouse and a Federal Express facility in the same city has pleaded guilty to using and carrying a destructive device. Eric Robinson, of San Diego, had earlier pleaded not guilty to more serious charges. He now faces a maximum sentence of 30 years in federal prison for what his attorney terms "a minimal role" in the bombings. Robinson has prior felony convictions, including one last year for vehicle theft.
Authorities indicted Robinson in August, along with roommates Rachelle Carlock and Ella Sanders. All three defendants had been charged with conspiracy and using weapons of mass destruction. The two women pleaded not guilty to the charges and are being held without bail. Carlock and Sanders will appear in court in El Centro on October 7.
According to the plea, Robinson drove Sanders to a Home Depot, where she purchased materials used to construct the explosive devices. Robinson also admitted to driving Carlock to San Diego from Menifee to place the explosives. He waited for her to finish and then returned her to Menifee.
The courthouse bomb contained nails and sprayed shrapnel along a two-block area when it exploded at about 1:40 AM on May 4. The explosion damaged security equipment at the courthouse but did not result in any personal injuries. The second bomb exploded at a Federal Express facility about twenty minutes after the first explosion, and damaged the front of the building but did not injure anyone. A third device failed to detonate and investigators discovered it in a parking lot.
