Thirteen Defendants Face Federal And State Drug Charges
Last month, US Attorney Thomas O'Brien announced the arrests of 13 people with connections to an alleged drug trafficking ring and street gang activity in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties. The thirteen defendants all have connections to the Northwest street gang. The Federal Bureau of Investigation worked cooperatively with local law enforcement agencies in those two counties to investigate the activities of the group.
According to O'Brien, the Santa Maria police department seized more than two pounds of methamphetamine, along with a small amount of cocaine, two handguns and an assault rifle in raids related to the investigation of the group's activities. O'Brien said that these arrests are the first of several planned crackdowns on what O'Brien terms as crime syndicates in these two counties.
One defendant is facing federal drug charges of trafficking 18.5 grams of methamphetamine and faces a 10-year minimum sentence. Other defendants face federal charges that could produce prison terms ranging from five years to life in prison. In addition, seven defendants face additional state charges for drug offenses. The Santa Barbara Superior Court has also authorized arrest warrants for four other individuals connected to the group for drug-related offenses.
