Baggage Handlers Arrested As Part Of LAX Theft Ring
Two baggage handlers employed at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) have been arrested in connection with a theft ring that targeted passenger bags. The operation, conducted by the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles International Airport recovered 272 stolen items and more than $10,000 in cash from more than a dozen countries from the two suspects' homes.Other LAX employees have said that they've seen organized theft rings at work in the airport, and that theft among employees is commonplace.
The sting, which occurred last month, focused on two baggage handlers who aroused suspicions based on the high number of thefts reported from flights the pair had worked. They were part of an operation that relied on x-ray information gathered from TSA baggage screening to find valuables in peoples' luggage. Since 2001, LAX passengers have filed nearly 3,800 theft claims for more than $300 million in personal property. Since the beginning of 2008, more than 30 LAX employees have been arrested on theft-related charges.
