Riverside County Plans Holiday DUI Crackdown
Riverside County law enforcement agencies plan to reduce the number of drunk drivers by increasing DUI enforcement between December 11, 2008 and January 3, 2009. According to a Riverside Police Department news release, sobriety checkpoints will be established in Perris, Cathedral City, Lake Elsinore, Hemet and Temecula, as well as other locations in the "Avoid the 30" campaign, which refers to a graphic image of handcuffs on the campaign literature.
Police departments in Banning, Beaumont, Blythe, Calimesa, Canyon Lake, Cathedral City, Coachella, Corona, Desert Hot Springs, Hemet, Indian Wells, Indio, Lake Elsinore, La Quinta, Moreno Valley, Murrieta, Norco, Palm Desert, Palm Springs, Perris, Rancho Mirage, Riverside, Riverside Community College, San Jacinto, and the University of California Riverside are operating jointly to provide added DUI enforcement.
In 2007, six persons were killed in DUI-related accidents in the city of Riverside. The number of DUI-related fatalities in 2008 is nearly twice that; in 2008, 11 people have been killed in DUI-related accidents in Riverside. According to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, DUI fatalities dropped 6.7% in 2006-2007 in part due to increased enforcement.
All vehicles passing through the checkpoints will be stopped. Drivers suspected of being under the influence of a controlled substance will be arrested. The agencies are also asking drivers who spot or suspect a drunk driver to call 911 to make a report. The joint taskforce is being funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
