Paris Hilton's Home Burglarized, $2M Taken
The Los Angeles Police Department reports that the home of hotel heiress Paris Hilton was burglarized last week and as much as $2 million in jewelry and other items were stolen. The heiress was not at home at the time of the theft. The incident was reported to the police by a security guard who discovered the intrusion.
A LAPD spokesperson said that the front door of the home was pried open and a bedroom was ransacked. Security video captured images of the suspect, whom police describe as a man wearing a hooded sweatshirt and gloves. Police provided no further descriptions or photographs of the incident.
In an interview following the burglary, Hilton told a weekly publication that she was "devastated" by the burglary and said that the items that were stolen had sentimental value to her, which made them irreplaceable.
In California, burglary can be treated like a felony or a misdemeanor, based on the circumstances of the case, including whether or not the dwelling was occupied at the time of the incident. Burglary is separate from crimes related to theft. Each theft case is different, and while sentencing guidelines can produce a more or less "uniform" sentence, crimes can be viewed differently by the court depending upon what is stolen, how the theft occurred, whether or not property was taken directly or indirectly from the owner, the value of the items taken, and whether aggravating factors, like the use of a weapon or the commission of other crimes occurred at the same time.
