LAPD Makes Arrests In Deputy's Slaying
The Los Angeles Police Department has announced the arrests of two men they say are connected to the fatal shooting of an off-duty Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy. Juan Escalante, 27, was shot in the head as he prepared to leave his home for work on August 2, 2008. No motive for the killings has been identified, but police say that the two men who were arrested are members of the Avenues street gang, which is known to be active in Escalante's neighborhood and has ties to the Eme, also known as the Mexican Mafia.
Guillermo Hernandez, 20, and Carlos Velasquez, 24, were arrested on Saturday, December 13, after police executed a series of search and arrest warrants. The men are being held without bail and face first-degree murder charges. Police have not said if they believe the shooting was random or that Escalante may have been a target.
Escalante left behind a widow and three young children. He is also survived by his parents, whom the family had been living with while they closed on a home in Pomona. Police had offered a $95,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the shooter and say that $75,000 of that reward money is still available for additional information about the crime.
