Joint Taskforce Arrests 28 In Counterfeit Goods Probe
The Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department arrested twenty-eight people and seized nearly $3 million worth of counterfeit goods in their annual joint holiday crackdown on theft via pirated merchandise. The agencies conducted a series of raids at stores in Santee Alley. The joint enforcement action has led to the arrests of more than 300 people and the confiscation of nearly $50 million in counterfeit items since 2004.
In 2007, the taskforce netted about $14 million in pirated items. This year, the task force has confiscated about $11 million in fake merchandise. Those arrested in the most recent raids will be charged with selling, distributing and manufacturing counterfeit merchandise. Most of the items confiscated were knock-offs of well-known brands and products including Sony, Nike, Coach and others. Merchandise included electronics, clothing, videotapes and DVDs, and computer games.
While the most recent raids were conducted in advance of the holidays, the taskforce says its activities are year-round and enforcement will continue as long as pirated goods are being sold in the area.
