Graffiti Artist Released From Jail
Cyrus Yazdani, a San Jose State graduate and professional graphic artist, was released from jail earlier this week after serving seven months of a ten-month sentence for "tagging" bridges, buses and overpasses in Southern California and Southern Nevada. Yazdani was accused in a 32-count action of causing more than $150,000 in damage to mostly public property.
Yazdani, who tagged using the moniker "Buket" came to the attention of authorities after videos of him tagging a busy freeway overpass were set to music and posted on the Internet site YouTube. Another videotaped act showed Yazdani tagging a MTA bus as people around it watched.
Yazdani was of special interest to the authorities because he was one of the most prolific graffiti artists at work in the area between 2005 and 2007. Yazdani was arrested in May in Los Angeles, and was already on probation in Las Vegas for his no-contest plea to felony vandalism charges there.
The case was somewhat unusual because prosecutors had been seeking a state prison sentence for Yazdani, citing the extraordinary amount of damage that he had caused. Instead, the judge sentenced him to ten months in jail, 256 hours of graffiti removal and five years of formal probation.
