Fire Official Arrested In Puppy's Death
Los Angeles County Assistant Fire Chief Glynn Johnson was arrested and charged with one count of felony animal cruelty and one count of using a dangerous weapon in the commission of a felony. Johnson is accused of beating a neighbor's puppy with a rock and breaking the animal's jaws. The dog was euthanized due to the severity of its injuries.
Johnson reportedly beat the puppy in view of a friend of the family who owned the dog. The case sparked national outrage because Johnson was not arrested, despite the conflicting reports of how the incident occurred and Johnson's rank within the fire department. The dog's owner also accused Johnson of shooting the family's previous pet with a pellet gun. Other neighbors living close to Johnson reported that their animals have also been attacked with pellet guns or have disappeared under mysterious circumstances.
Johnson has been put on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the case, but risks the loss of his job if convicted on felony charges. Johnson's arraignment is scheduled for January 13, 2009.
